How to Turn a Shipping Container Into Your Dream Workshop

Step 1: Choose Your Container

Step 2: Prep Your Site

  • 📏 Clearance — make sure there are no low branches, power lines, or fences in the way.

Step 3: Insulation (Critical in Florida)

Pro tip: paint the exterior with reflective/white paint to reduce heat absorption by 30-40%.

Step 4: Electrical

Run a sub-panel from your main house panel. Most workshops need at least a 60-amp sub-panel for:

  • 💡 LED lighting (recessed or shop lights)
  • 🔌 Outlets every 4-6 feet along the walls
  • ❄️ A mini-split AC unit (12,000 BTU for 20ft, 18-24,000 BTU for 40ft)
  • 🔧 Dedicated circuits for power tools (table saw, welder, compressor)

Hire a licensed electrician for the sub-panel. Everything inside, you can DIY with surface-mounted conduit.

Step 5: Ventilation

Even with AC, you need airflow. Cut vents into the container walls (or use the existing container vents) and add:

  • An exhaust fan near the ceiling
  • An intake vent near the floor on the opposite end
  • A mini-split AC/heat pump for year-round comfort
